To add a little intrigue to the Lassen County Centennial Tour was the determination of selection of who is featured and who is not. Each individual, of course, has a unique tale. The county supervisor selected, while seated on the board, voted to give the contract for the construction of the first courthouse to his close friend, and that is just the beginning. These are the kind of anecdotes I have an unearthed through many decades of research. As I have mentioned before I am only doing this tour once. Do not even dare to ask for a private tour, if you value your mental health.

I would find it rather doubtful that federal aviation officials would permit useage of this airstrip. However, for many years, it was maintained by the County of Lassen, though some pondered why.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 16, 2017 for fun and interesting times as Lassen County celebrates the 100 year of the dedication of its courthouse on South Lassen Street. The day first starts off that morning with another centennial dedication—Peter Lassen’s Monument. Among the many activities on tap that day include tours of the courthouse by members of the Lassen County Historical Society; a barbecue at the courthouse lawn; a cemetery tour at the nearby Susanville Cemetery and more to be topped off that evening with

the Susanville Symphony’s Concert on the Green at the courthouse.

First of all, I want to thank everyone who responded, there was a lot more interest than I had expected. As previously mentioned it will be a limited edition in the neighborhood of 50 or 60. The photograph selection is nearly complete, though I have not quite settled on the cover photograph. There is going to be a little special surprise to be included in the calendar. Those who forget to reserve one this is good time as any to send a note. More information to follow when the calendar is released.

Of course, the first part of the month has an emphasis on the Lassen County Courthouse Centennial. As usual there is always a wide variety of topics explored each month. The month starts off with A Railroad for Milford, followed by the Eagle Lake pumping plant; Westwood’s Great Purge among other items. The item on Frederick Lander was scheduled in June, kept getting bumped, so finally it will appear this month.

No, it is not the centennial for the Susanville Cemetery, since it has been around a lot longer than that. There is to be a cemetery tour, inconjunction with the Lassen County Courthouse Centennial Celebration in September. I will be doing a one-time tour of various county officials whose final resting place is a just a short distance from the courthouse.

In the next few weeks, I will posting those souls who only made honorable mention or less. There are certainly going to be some “raised eyebrows” as to who made the cut and who did not.

With temperatures in Northeastern California to break the century mark this week, there are many places one, if they have the time and means, to beat the heat. For the adventurous there are places like Crater, Homer and Taylor Lakes, lest we not forget Caribou Wilderness. There is always the various Eagle Lake Ice Caves who want to do some exploring. Finally, with Lassen Park road open there is plenty of snow banks to cool off in. If you are wondering if it the heat will ever end, as a general rule by the end of this month, the region experiences a cold snap, just enough to drive the doves out of the area for opening day on September 1.

After a very bumpy first seven months of this year, I am looking forward to some smoother sailing for the remainder of the year. Finally, I can focus more on my historical work, than tending to a multitude of “other” matters. I actually have a good line up for early August and with a little luck maybe I can tackle the legend of the Holden Dick Mine among other topics. The road through Lassen National Volcanic Park is now open, thanks due in part with assistance from Caltrans, otherwise it could have been delayed until August. It is the latest opening since July 21, 1995. So here is a perfect time to have some summertime fun in the snow!
