In honor of my father’s birthday, (Leroy W. Purdy), this post will be brief. He began his logging career working at Camp Harvey. His next venture was with his brother James, and they formed Purdy Brothers Logging. This grew into a larger outfit known as Susanville Logging. Circumstances beyond his control saw that company dissolved in the early 1960s. The next re-incarnation was L&M Logging. Just some random related photographs for your enjoyment.
Tim, Thanks for sharing Leroy’s BD and history. I didn’t meet Leroy, and learn of his legendary life, until late 1970s. I think I shared with you the “entertainment” he provided our sons in about 1980 when he ran his DG pit on Gold Run and dumped his belly dump and tractor on their side in our driveway on Richmond Road. He crawled out the passenger-side window, used our phone to summon a friend with a log loader to right tractor and trailer and within an hour was on to his next adventurer no worse for wear. I’m sure you have lived and heard many other stories.
I remember way back when the Pioneer Bar put a large pair of logging boots in their case window with a sign that anyone who could fit in them could have them.
Tunney Zunino wore them out of the bar commenting that they were a little big but otherwise they were fine. I think they were a size 13. Not such a large size these days.
Tunney was my Uncle. They were size 14. My dad was Lidamo Pollastrini. After Tunney passed away in 1953 my father ended up with those boots. My dad told me that same story. Remember those boots when i was young. Thank you Sir for the remembrance.
