Tucked betweenGrasshopper Valley and the Madeline Plains on the surface looks pretty desolate. By the early1880s, homesteaders took a chance and located there. By 1888, the Dry Valley School was established. It soon followed by the Addington Post Office. To round things P.E. Bowles donated a small parcel land to Lassen County for a public cemetery.

The after effects of World War I were dramatic to such rural enclaves as Dry Valley. The young men drafted were reluctant and did not return to hardscrabble existence of the former homesteads. After years when the Dry Valley School was closed, the issue to abolish district was discussed. In 1932, an investigation revealed the total population of Dry Valley consisted of eight bachelors, thus it was apparent there was not going to be a revival of the school.

Today, no one we can even access the public cemetery. The adjoining property owner has a locked gate on the access road.
