Cemetery Tours

Last year at this time I conducted a St. Patrick’s Cemetery Tour, in which we visited the graves of the various Irish immigrants who played a role in the region’s heritage. Last October we did a Oktoberfest Cemetery Tour, similar to the St. Patrick’s, but the focus was on the German immigrants.
While, of late, I have not given much consideration of future cemetery tours. There has been an informal discussion about a cemetery tour this fall to focus on the county officials buried in the Susanville Cemetery as part of the centennial Lassen County Courthouse celebration. Whatever, the case may be I am always open to suggestions.

Anniversary Time

Two years ago, on February 5, 2015, I launched this website, without much fan fare. Partly due to the fact the region was hit with a violent windstorm, and by that afternoon the region was without power. Even when power was restored, it would still take several days to upload the various archive and cemetery records. In addition, it was a big learning curve for me, and still is, a little more about that later.
On March 1, 2015, I began doing the daily postings. It was not until April after I became a bit more proficient with the daily posts, that the subscription feature appeared. I do thank all of you who subscribe for your support.
Register/Member Log In Feature as some of you have experienced, its not quite functioning. There is a glitch somewhere, that I have not figured it out. At the moment nothing is blocked, but I want to change that so certain posts are available for subscribers only. In addition, I have a 1939 film of the Christensen Ranch operations, that I want to put up, but first I need to fix the register problem.

Onward we go, with a final note. In the month of March, there are a few posts from early 2015 that will appear, for many they will be new. I am hoping by the end of the month, to have sorted through everything in my mother’s house (estate sale pending) and when that occurs I can return to a more normal schedule.

An Eagle Lake Update

I am aware that there are a lot of folks anxious to learn about the level of Eagle Lake. When I have more information on the lake level, I will relay that information. In the meantime, though I wanted to share these two photographs taken recently by a friend of mine.

Susanville Mural Tour

I was originally scheduled to conduct a mural tour on January 14, plus some other stops, for a group from Reno, Nevada. However, due to weather conditions and other circumstances, I had to cancel.
Of course, I always doing something a bit different, than a usual tour person would do. Its my intention to include some of the history of the buildings the murals adorn. Take for instance the LMUD building. It was built in 1940 for Safeway. Ironically, one of the murals on that building depicts Safeway’s rival Purity.
If there is an interest, I could conduct this tour during the summer, to coincide when the Farmer’s Market is going on. Let me know if anyone is interested.
Now, to work on a Power Point presentation on the Red River Lumber Company and how Westwood came to be for Forest Forum this spring.

Your Topic

On a quarterly basis, I ask you, the reader, if there is something you would like to learn more about or maybe its something you heard but question its validity. So here is an opportunity to participate. I will do my best to answer any questions. It should be noted, it may take awhile for the answer to appear as a post. The primary reason, many of the daily posts are done nearly a month in advance. So by the time you read this, I am already working on posts in the middle of February. Whatever the case may be, I look forward to hearing from you. Of course, it should be noted that paid subscribers requests receive priority. In addition, you can always send an request at any time. Such is the case with the Bayley Creek Sawmill on the north side of Fredonyer Peak.

Ardene Purdy 1931-2017

My mother, Ardene Tanner Purdy, passed away on January 7, 2017. She came from hardy Lassen County pioneer stock and more about her and heritage in the future. Some may notice that a number of the historic photographs featured in these posts are credited to her mother, Lola Murrer Tanner.
My apologies if I have not answered anyone’s emails recently; along with this snafu between the web host server and my local, about the daily notifications. Please be patience, while I work through these issues.

The Pioneer Brand Project

With the Lassen Ale Works moving out of the Pioneer within a few months, has thrown a monkey wrench into this project. What the future holds for the Pioneer at this time, is not known. Should it close it affects the project, since the brands on the wall at that location and the story behind them go hand in hand. I will continue to gather the history of the brands, but the current circumstances places a barrier, and so whether a book will appear on the horizon, only time will tell.

Happy New Year!

Well, we certainly covered a wide variety of topics in 2016. This year we will continue to do the same. Recently, I unearthed new material relating to Leon Bly and his failed Eagle Lake project. I also look forward to visiting some obscure historical sites to photograph and share them with everyone. So sit back, and relax in knowing there is plenty in store for 2017. Don’t forget you can always go back and examine prior posts, which there are some 700+.
I also hope, that some of the readers will step up to the plate to subscribe. While there is a following of some 9,000 readers a month, less than 100 actually subscribe and/or donate. So, I hope a few will surprise me with a contribution, after there are various costs to maintain the site, such as host/server and domain fees.
