A reader wrote : “Hi. Tim! I know there are much more positive aspects about the history of Westwood that people would find interesting. It seems to me that using “Westwood Rumor Mill” and “Westwood’s Deportation of Immigrants”  as the titles puts negative thoughts about our town in the reader’s mind right from the get go.  Have you posted any other articles about Westwood that can show me that I have jumped to the wrong conclusion here? I sincerely hope so, as I truly enjoy your other work. You are an amazing historian! Hoping to hear from you.”

Dear reader: First of all, I enjoy input from everyone, but really this not the Westwood Chamber of Commerce website. All kidding aside on the latter comment.  The article concerning the deportation of immigrants, is an important issue. No matter what your party affiliation, a lot of people were not aware of prior events, and it will be a hot topic during this year’s presidential election. The rumor mill article, was in part of the previous article concerning the dynamiting of the millpond. In a company town like Westwood, when lumber production was curtailed, it raised alarms among the workers if it was sign of something more ominous.  On the other hand, you seemed to miss the recent article on The Meadows. At the end of each article are tags and if you click on it, it will bring up every article on Westwood, or Red River Lumber Company or any other topic.

This may or may not be the answer you are seeking. However, it is important to have a full understanding of past events, and to skewer and eliminate items that are not deemed pleasant, does no one justice.

  1. I a’m a little older than you Tim, and I remember thing from back in the early 40s . one thing I remember was as a kid always looking for Ripley s Believe it or not in the Sunday paper( Sacramento Bee) and remember seeing at one time Westwood, Calif. had no painted houses. another time Ripley s said all the houses were heated with steam & the wood sidewalks running to the houses were kept cleared of snow by steam pipes .
