In the 1970s and 80s, the Ski A Volcano was a popular advertising slogan for the Lassen Ski Area at Lassen Park. The other day, someone asked me about this topic. Downhill skiing at Lassen, like so many places witnessed a dramatic increase in the sport after World War II.
Lassen, of course, was extremely popular for those residing around the region. In 2009, when I did book signing on Lassen Volcanic at the park, a number of people approached me and told me that this was where they learned to ski. In a second breath, they were dismayed when it was discontinued.
So what happened to this popular spot. There were several issues. The ski resort, inside a national park, sent a mixed message, since the improvements conflicted with the intent of the national park’s message of a pristine natural environment. While the place was popular, in 1993, California Guest Services informed park officials that after eight consecutive years of operating the ski area at a loss, it was time to get out of the business. The park service agreed to let California Guest Services out of this portion of their 20-year contract.
The chalet was converted into a visitors center until 2003 when it was condemned. In 2005, the chalet was demolished in preparation for the park’s long-anticipated Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center.
