Some folks may have heard about Nataqua Territory. It was a form of self governance among Honey Lakers, back in 1856.

Those hardy souls, who did not believe they were attached to California or that state’s territorial neighbors created a substantial territory, that today comprises the majority of Nevada. According Fairfield, and he alone, nataqua was the local Native American term for woman.  Ironically, the local tribes of Maidu, Paiute and Washo have no such word. May be it was word from one of the original signers from something he learned back east prior to arriving out west. Or as customary of the day, since Nataqua Territory was short-lived that it was a hoax and and way to amuse themselves in an entertaining and political way.
