In August 1890, the NCO Railway reached Brubeck’s Ranch also known as Lower Hot Springs on the east side of Honey Lake. Very briefly the new terminus was called Heriot’s Place. It was named for Edgar Heriot, who in 1884 became the General Manager of the NCO. It was an odd move since in the spring of 1887 the railway abruptly ousted him with Erasmus Gest. Anyhow, Heriot’s Place became known as Amedee, for Amedee Depau Moran, one of the owners of the NCO. Currently, I am working on a piece about Gest who had a thirteen year tenure with the NCO.
