On a recent trip to Standish, to see if the gossip was true that work on the demolition of Neil’s Mercantile was underway. Suffice to say, it was not true, but discussions have been in the works for the past few years.
The building was constructed in 1906 by the fraternal organization known as Foresters of America. One of the reasons of the popularity of fraternal organizations in that era, as a member one could obtain insurance. Like so many fraternal organizations their halls were a two-story affair. Of course, the top floor was the hall used by its members for various functions. The first floor was rented to a commercial enterprise, which in turn the rent money was used to pay off the construction debt, plus for maintenance of the property.
In this particular instant the Foresters struggled with the debt, and sought assistance. On February 5, 1908 the Standish Hall Association was formed. Its goal was to sell $5,000 in stock to purchase the Forester’s building, which they succeeded. For a number of years, everything went smoothly with Susanville businessman, C.E. Emerson renting the first floor which he operated a general mercantile store. By 1920, Emerson was frustrated with the Standish Hall Association, as they would not make the improvements to the building he desired. At an impasse, Emerson went around buying stock in the Association to gain a controlling interest. Which not only did he do, he would eventually buy the building.
For years the upstairs hall was used by the Native Daughters and Sons of the Golden West. If you have memories to the store or hall that you would like to share in a future post about the building, please contact me.
Some years ago I came into possession of the old stamping machine ( hand lever ) with the round brass press still in contact. When I press handle down it imprints, in a circle: top: STANDISH HALL ASSOCIATE. Bottom: STANDISH, CALIF. in the middle: incorporated. Feb. 17, 1908.
Would love to know more about it and it’s worth?
