Westwood Independent
Westwood, Lassen County, California
Obituary Index for 1917-1919
Westwood, located 25 miles east of Susanville, the Lassen County seat, was established in 1912, though it would take two years before the majority of the town was constructed. Westwood began as the Company town of the Red River Lumber Company. In 1944 Red River sold its mill and town to the Fruit Growers Supply Company. In 1956, Fruit Growers closed the mill and sold the townsite.
The Westwood Independent was the town’s first newspaper, and made its debut on July 4, 1917. The last issue available was that of December 30, 1919. The paper suspended operations in early 1920 and in May 1920 it was succeeded by the Westwood Sugar Pine.
*Denotes death of a resident, former resident or relative of a Westwood resident occurred outside of Lassen County.
